Set up Claude Tag in Slack with Sonnet and a budget
Connect your Slack workspace to Claude Tag, choose Sonnet, and verify a reply and follow-up before giving Claude access to your website or business tools.
Claude Tag lets your team ask Claude to work in a Slack channel and continue the conversation in a thread. Start with one small exchange: connect the workspace, choose Sonnet, set spending controls, and check that Claude answers. Your website can stay where it is while you prepare the connection.
You need a Claude Team or Enterprise organization. Pro and Max use a different Slack setup. You also need the Owner or Primary Owner role in Claude and a Slack workspace administrator account. 1. Pick one Slack channel for training
Open your existing Slack workspace, or create one through Slack's workspace setup. Keep the first exercise in a channel used for training. An ordinary channel is enough; a special Code channel is not required for the reply exercise.
Keep these two browser tabs open:
- Your Slack training channel, where you will send the request.
- Claude Tag organization settings, where you will connect Slack and choose what Claude can access.
In Claude settings, check the organization name near the top of the sidebar. If you have a personal Max account and a company Team account, the company organization is the one needed for Tag.
In Claude Code organization settings, confirm Routines is enabled. Anthropic lists this as a prerequisite even for a manually requested Tag reply. Enabling the capability does not require creating a scheduled task.
Done when: Routines is enabled, you can open the training channel and see Claude Tag settings for the intended organization.
2. Connect Slack to the Claude organization
Install the official Claude app through Claude for Slack. Check that the installation is for your training workspace before approving access. If the official app is already installed, you can keep it; moving to Tag does not require a separate Slack app.
In the training channel, type /invite, choose Claude, and send the invitation. Then type @Claude and select Claude from Slack's suggestion list. Selecting the suggestion makes a real mention; typing the letters alone may not.
Send this as a new channel message:
If setup offers Specific channel, select the training channel rather than the entire workspace.
Claude returns a one-use pairing code. Copy it into the pairing field in Claude Tag settings. It connects the Slack workspace to the organization that will pay for Tag channel work. The code expires after 15 minutes, so complete both sides together. Anthropic's workspace pairing instructions
Done when: the Claude setup screen names your Slack workspace as connected. A personal-account authorization message alone is not this confirmation.
3. Set spending controls before sending work
Open Claude Tag usage settings. Set both Org-wide limit and Default spend limit to an amount you approve. The first covers Tag across the organization; the second supplies a starting limit for new channels. The example uses $10 for each, rather than $10 for every person.
Check the saved values again after moving away from each field. In the organization's general Usage settings, inspect auto-reload, which buys additional credits automatically. Leave it off for a small manual trial.

Done when: both limits show the amounts you chose, you know whether auto-reload is enabled, and you have checked whether a promotion changes how those limits apply.
4. Select Sonnet before the first task
In Claude Tag settings, turn on Enable Claude Tag for your organization to reveal the access controls. In the Slack access area, choose Default Slack, then expand Advanced. This is the exact settings label, not an extra plan.
Under Default model, choose an explicit Sonnet option. The September 14 training account offered Sonnet 5. Wait for the save to finish, then select the training workspace in the same access area. Its model setting should show that it inherits Sonnet, or explicitly select Sonnet for that workspace.
The Default Slack choice applies across connected workspaces that have no override. In an organization already using Tag elsewhere, choose Sonnet on the training workspace or channel instead of changing everyone else's default. Anthropic's workspace and channel model controls

Avoid making the first request “switch to Sonnet” when the first reply must also use Sonnet. Claude's acknowledgement uses the previous model; the switch affects the next reply. Changing the default also does not change threads already underway. Anthropic's model-selection behavior
Done when: the training workspace explicitly displays Sonnet as its selected or inherited model, before you send a new task.
5. Finish the workspace setup with only the access needed
If the workspace says its setup is incomplete, select Resume [workspace name] setup inside that workspace's access panel. In the training account, this opened a shorter sequence:
- Confirm the existing Slack pairing and select Next.
- Leave business tools unconnected for the reply exercise and select Next.
- Continue past repository access without choosing Connect all.
- If an included balance is already available, select Skip on the credit purchase screen.
- Review the workspace name and select Launch Claude. If a member-notification option is offered, leave it off for this training exercise; do not select Notify members now afterward.
The main setup wizard can show a different sequence, including a request to choose tools. If your controls differ, use the workspace's own Resume setup action and consult the official setup instructions linked earlier. If no funded or promotional balance is available, a Team organization needs usage funding before channel work can run. Review the amount and tax on the purchase screen before accepting a charge.
Done when: the workspace no longer shows an incomplete-setup warning and its selected or inherited model remains Sonnet.
6. Verify the reply and the follow-up
In the training channel, create a new message with a selected @Claude mention:
Open the reply's thread, the smaller conversation attached to that message. Check the model name beneath Claude's answer. The training reply displayed claude-sonnet-5[1m]; the Sonnet name is the relevant part of this check.

Done when: both answers say “Training connection ready” and both reply footers identify Sonnet. This checks the Slack conversation, not access to your website.

Connect the hiring desk after Slack works
