Set up Slack for Claude Code and your first AI agent

A useful setup needs one accountable owner, one working channel, a clear app approval rule, and the people who will review the work. Slack Free is enough to test the path. A paid Slack plan becomes a separate decision when the team needs longer history, more app capacity, or stronger administration.

Decide who owns the workspace and the first result

Use a company-domain email when possible. The person who creates the workspace becomes its Primary Owner and controls the most consequential settings. For a nonprofit, this should be a current staff leader or operations owner rather than a temporary volunteer.

Choose one real first job. A website correction led by FARO, the AI SEO strategist, a grant-research brief, or a podcast-production handoff gives the team something observable to test. “Try AI in Slack” has no finish line.

Create the workspace and one working channel

  1. Create or identify the company workspace

    Follow Slack’s workspace creation guide. Use a recognizable company or organization name and record who holds the Primary Owner role.

    Done when: the Primary Owner can open Workspace settings and the workspace name identifies the organization.

  2. Invite the people who will request and review work

    Start with the owner, the person responsible for the first job, and the person allowed to approve a public or binding action. One person may hold all three responsibilities in a very small business. The Slack work-surface guide explains what belongs in the shared record.

    Done when: each participant can sign in and their approval responsibility is written down.

  3. Create one channel for the first job

    Use a specific name such as #website-work or #grant-research. The Pro and Max Claude Code route starts from channels rather than direct messages. Claude Tag also needs an approved channel for shared work.

    Done when: the intended participants can open the channel and post a test message.

  4. Review the app approval rule

    Slack owners can allow members to install apps or require approval. Review Slack’s app management guide and choose who may approve Claude and later customer-work connections.

    Done when: the workspace has an assigned app approver and that person can reach the app-management settings.

  5. Write the first approval boundary in the channel

    State who may request repository changes, who reviews the returned result, and who approves publication or another external action.

    Done when: a pinned or saved channel message names the requester, reviewer, and final approver.
